ARTICLE: WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT MALTA ISLANDS?

If you are going to visit Malta for a short time, it would be better to do it on 29 of June, because Maltese celebrate the “L-Imnarja” (St. Peter or St. Paul).
It is a very famous summer folk festival.

Officially, the Republic of Malta comprises an archipelago of seven islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Its official languages are Maltese and English. The reason of the English influence both on language and administration, education and legislation is because in 1800 Malta became part of the British Empire.

Here you will be never alone because Malta population is estimated at 404,039. In fact, the density per square kilometre is by far the highest in the E.U and one of the highest in the world.

Let me talk about the “L-Imnarja”.
It is celebrated because Saint Paul was shipwrecked on the island in 60. A.D. while on his way to Rome and brought Christianity to Malta. Because of this, the Majority of the Maltese are Roman Catholic.

The feast is marked by events at nearby Buskett Gardens, Malta’s largest area of natural woodland. Here, families and friends have picnic almost all day and night.

Maltese taste wine and food such as the traditional rabbit dish and the night passes with singing, folk bands playing…
Besides, the day after the celebration continues with an agricultural show followed by bareback horse-riding and donkey races. The winners are awarded with colourful banners to take proudly home.

Finally, if you are Maltese and you are going to be married, don’t forget that your groom has to promise you to take you to the Buskett celebration after you are married. This has been the custom along the centuries.
