Ghana is located in West Africa near the equator and on the Greenwich meridian. Ghana’s total area is 238,537 sq km with a population of about 22 million. In both cases Ghana has half of the amount of Spain. Its capital is Accra with a population of 2 million. English is the official language and is universally used in schools. There are 9 more African languages apart from English and French. The religious composition is: 63% Christian, 21% traditionalist or Indigenous beliefs and 16% Muslim. Religious tolerance in Ghana is very high. Its climate is tropical. In the 15 century Portuguese arrived there. Then, the next 250 years it was inhabited by Portuguese, Dutch, British and Danes. British established a crown colony, Gold Coast, in 1874. Independence finally came in 1957, making Ghana the 1 black African nation to win freedom from its colonizers. Now Ghana is a constitutional republic and member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Kofi Annan is from Ghana.
Panafest is a biennial festival of African dance, music and other performing arts that is held every two years. It is a cultural event dedicated to the enhancement of the ideals of Pan-Africanism and the development of the African continent. Panafest 2007 especially significant since it coincides with Ghana’s 50 Anniversary of Independence. A sample of Panafest activities are:
-The Grand Durbar of Chiefs, when tribal leaders and Queen Mothers process in decorated palanquins, shaded by the traditional umbrellas, and supported by drummers and warriors discharging ancient muskets.
-Rites of Passage Programs.
-Slave March Reenactment.
-Midnight Candlelight Vigil at Cape Coast Castle.
-Emmancipation Day Commemoration.
-Musical and Dramatic Performances.
Ghana is known for its friendly people and hospitality. The motto is: “Freedom and Justice”.
