Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is a holiday that is very unique to the United States, where it is a very popular holiday. On this day, always the fourth Thursday in November, people celebrate the arrival of the pilgrims in Massachusetts. History says that when the pilgrims arrived, the Native Americans welcomed them with a dinner. At this holiday Americans say what they are thankful for and families eat a big turkey dinner together. People don’t give presents like at Christmas; instead, they spend all day cooking, spending time with their families and watching American football. Often in elementary schools kids will dress up like the pilgrims and the Native Americans. Because it is celebrated on a Thursday, many people don’t work the following day and they spend the whole weekend with their families. Thanksgiving Day is the time of year when most people travel because there are not a lot of other long weekends. The Friday after is known as Black Friday. It is when everyone starts their Christmas shopping.

People celebrate Thanksgiving all over the United States, the world’s third-largest country with approximately 300 million people. The main language spoken is English, although many people speak Spanish. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated by people of all religions and backgrounds, and every year it is a reminder to give thanks for what you have.
